Christie's Post-War and Contemporary Art Day Sale saw a 2005 painting set a new auction record for the Swedish artist Karin Mamma Andersson, whose work can be found in major collections around the world. Karin Mamma Andersson's acrylic and oil painting On Tenterhooks more than tripled its asking price (£180,000-250,000), selling for £756,000.

"I am not surprised," commented Pontus Silfverstolpe, co-founder of Barnebys. "Karin Mamma Andersson is one of our greatest artists of all time and has long been recognised on the international scene. Personally, I believe that the prices for her art will continue to rise."

The day before, works by impressionists, modernists and contemporary artists were sold at the premises on 8 King Street in London. The star of Christie's 20th/21st Century: London Evening Sale was Pablo Picasso's Femme dans un rocking-chair (Jacqueline), which depicts his second wife and muse Jacqueline Roque. Painted in 1956, it belongs to what British art historian John Richardson described as 'l'époque Jacqueline'. "It is her image that permeates Picasso's oeuvre from 1954 until his death," Richardson wrote. The 194.5 x 130.1 cm oil painting was sold for £7,159,500.
