On August 23, RM Sotheby’s announced it broke several world records, bringing in a total of $239.2 million over a three-night auction in Monterey, California. An incredible 95% of all lots were sold, making it the highest-grossing automotive auction ever.
The sale kicked off on Thursday, which brought in over $41 million, headlined by the 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Special Roadster by Sindelfingen that sold for $9.9 million. The second day totaled $75 million, including the 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC Spider by Scaglietti auctioned for $7.8 million. Another Ferrari Sport Spider, this time the 1955 Ferrari 410, sold on the last day for a staggering $22 million, contributing to the $123.3 million brought in on Saturday night alone.

But the real surprise of the evening came when a 2022 Porsche broke a new record for the most expensive factory new Porsche ever sold, selling at $3.6 million. The special edition car has been manufactured as a modern-day interpretation of the beloved Cars character Sally Carrera. It is the fruit of a unique collaboration between Pixar Animation Studios and Porsche in celebration of the 20-year anniversary of Sally Carrera, based on a 2002 Porsche 911 coupe.

The ‘Sally Special’, as it has been named, comes as an exciting model of the 911 Carrera GTS, ‘made for people who love to drive’. Offering 473 hp from a twin-turbo boxer engine, the car combines power and design. One of its most notable features is the paint color named Sally Blue Metallic, a hue made exclusively for the car and also inspired by the animated character. The car even features a ‘tattoo’ under its rear wing, just like the one Sally has in the film.
