A landmark haute couture sale took place on January 29 at Le Bristol, where the Dior Masterpieces auction from the collection of Mouna Ayoub totaled €6.19 million, setting a new world record for a single-owner haute couture auction. Organized by Kerry Taylor Auctions in partnership with Maurice Auction, the white-glove sale saw all 95 lots sell, spanning nearly four decades of Dior couture.

The result follows earlier sales from Ayoub’s collection: auctions of her Chanel and Jean Paul Gaultier couture in 2023 and 2024 produced record lot prices of €312,000 and €377,000, respectively.

The top price was paid for a painted silk evening dress from John Galliano’s controversial Spring/Summer 2000 Clochards collection, also known as “Homeless,” which realized €663,000, surpassing the previous Dior couture auction record. Galliano’s work received the highest bids overall: two newspaper-print couture looks from the same collection sold for €624,000 and €390,000, while a black taffeta gown adorned with miniature bottles and keys brought €546,000.

A beaded, bias-cut gown from his Spring/Summer 1997 Maasai couture debut achieved €510,000, and an embroidered patchwork ensemble from Fall/Winter 2001’s Rebel Chic collection sold for €390,000. In total, six Galliano designs surpassed the previous house record, set by a Marc Bohan gown once owned by Elizabeth Taylor that sold for $362,500 at Christie’s New York in 2011.

Designs from earlier and later Dior eras also set new highs. A Fall 1990 beaded cocktail dress by Gianfranco Ferré sold for €58,500, establishing a new auction record for the designer, while a silver-thread-embroidered redingote from Raf Simons’s Fall/Winter 2014 couture collection achieved €91,000, likewise a record. Additional highlights included a gilt-embroidered ensemble from Galliano’s Fall/Winter 1998 Diorient Express collection, which realized €286,000.

Ayoub, a Franco-Lebanese businesswoman, has been a committed Dior couture client since the late 1970s, acquiring her first Marc Bohan suits as a young bride and continuing to commission pieces under successive creative directors. Much of the collection was worn only once—or privately—preserving runway-original garments in near-museum condition. Her close engagement with Galliano’s most experimental period, including her decision to acquire the Clochards couture in its entirety, proved central to the sale’s outcome, as rising demand for archive couture has intensified competition between museums and private buyers. The result was a concentrated group of museum-level works, rarely available outside institutional holdings, brought to market at once.
