Last January, Heritage Auctions announced the sale of the Holy Grail of game consoles: a unique prototype of the Nintendo-Playstation. The online auction is currently open and has already passed the $300,000 mark (fees included). Eleven days before the end of the auction, there’s no doubt that the closing price-tag will reach new heights.

The prototype was purchased in the early 1990s for only $75 by an employee of Advanta. Its former owner, Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson (boss of the American division of Sony Computer Entertainment), had forgotten all about it after his resignation.

It is the first time that the prototype has gone under the hammer, and even before the auction has ended, it has already set the record for the most expensive video game item in history.
