On 22 December 2024, a Brown Derby beer can made history at Morean Auctions, selling for a staggering $93,600—far surpassing its estimated value and setting a new record for beer can collectibles. While a few deteriorated examples (discovered outdoors with significant rust) have surfaced, and another indoor example has been rumored but not confirmed, this can is the only high-quality example known to have hit the market.
The Brown Derby beer brand, produced by Humboldt Brewing in Eureka, California, has a unique history rooted in post-Prohibition America. After the end of Prohibition in 1933, brewers sought new ways to package and sell beer, with cans becoming a popular option. Brown Derby, a store brand created for West Coast Grocery, was first bottled in 1933 with a green and brown label and a hat and cane logo. By 1935, the beer was being sold in cans, but due to a lawsuit from the famous Brown Derby restaurant in Los Angeles, the design had to be altered, resulting in the rare silver can that is now highly sought after by collectors. Though the brand changed hands and labels over the years, the Brown Derby beer can has remained a prized piece in the world of beer memorabilia.
