Frame dimensions 17 1/2 x 21 1/2 x 1 in., Sight size 10 x 14 3/4 in. Yasuo Kuniyoshi was a leading figure in American modernism during the first half of the twentieth century. Born in Okayama, Japan, he immigrated to the United States in 1906 and later settled in New York, where he studied at the Art Students League under Kenneth Hayes Miller. His distinctive paintings, drawings, and prints combine elements of European and American modernism with artistic sensibilities informed by his Japanese upbringing. In 1929, he was selected for the Museum of Modern Art's landmark exhibition Nineteen Living Americans, and in 1948 the Whitney Museum of American Art presented a major retrospective of his work. An influential teacher and the first president of Artists Equity Association, Kuniyoshi occupies an important position in the history of twentieth-century American art. His works are held by major institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Smithsonian American Art Museum.
