Ureilite is a rare type of rocky meteorite with a unique mineralogical composition that is very different from that of other rocky meteorites. This dark gray to brown meteorite is named after the village of Novy Urey, Republic of Mordovia, Russia, where a meteorite of this type fell on September 4, 1886. Ureilites are classified as primitive achondrite meteorites, a very rare and scarce subgroup within meteorites. The anecdote recounts how some field workers saw the meteorite fall, collected it, crushed it, and ate some fragments. Curiously, ureilites are famous for being the hardest meteorites in the world, because they contain tiny diamonds inside, which makes them almost impossible to cut, even when using diamond wire for the job. They are composed of olivine (50-75%) and pyroxene (14-35%) with very small amounts of Fe and Ni metals. Among the crystals of these minerals, in the matrix, are noble gases and carbon (sometimes in the form of diamond, which is an indicator of high pressures).
