Ureilite is a rare type of stony meteorite with a unique mineralogical composition that is very different from other stony meteorites. This type of meteorite, gray-dark or brown in color, is named after the village of Novy Urey, Republic of Mordovia, Russia, where a meteorite of this type fell on September 4, 1886. Ureilites are classified as primitive achondrite meteorites, which are a very rare and scarce sub-group within meteorites. The anecdote tells how some field workers saw the meteor fall, collected it, ground it up, and ate some fragments. Interestingly, ureilites are famous for being the hardest meteorites in the world, because they contain small diamonds inside, which makes them almost impossible to cut, even when using diamond-tipped wire for that work. They are composed of olivine (50-75%) and pyroxene (14-35%) and very small amounts of Fe and Ni metals. Among the crystals of these minerals, in the matrix, are noble gases and carbon (sometimes in the form of diamond, which is an indicator of high pressures).
