Village with a church over a wide rolling countryside Wilhelm Battermann (1872–1964) – Oil on canvas, signed WORK From a rise the view falls over the red roofs of a village, over a large church with a light-colored gable, over gardens and groups of trees down into a broad hilly landscape. The fields lie in the evening light and glow in yellow, ochre and fresh green; field stripes run like ribbons to a blue mountain range on the horizon, above which a violet-tinged sky. Battermann uses color boldly and fleshy in broad planes; the houses are built with a few decisive strokes – a North German painter who brings the light of the Impressionists into a solid, calm composition. Landscape format, 48.5 x 69.4 cm. ARTIST Wilhelm Battermann was born on 1 July 1872 in Elze near Hildesheim and died on 9 May 1964 in Hamburg. He studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Hannover and at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin, studied further with Heinrich Knirr in Munich, and later taught as a professor at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Altona. He was a founding member of the Altonaer Künstlerverein. He painted landscapes, still lifes and harbor scenes, mainly along the Elbe and in Northern Germany. Vollmer’s Künstlerlexikon lists works in public collections in Berlin, Altona, Hanover and Munich; Rump’s Lexikon der bildenden Künstler Hamburgs und Altonas also lists him. Doris Fliegner was a teacher in Salzgitter and Helmstedt and collected art all her life, with a focus on the Braunschweig region. Unlike Worpswede or Dachau, Braunschweig never had an artists’ colony; the art life was carried by the Art Association (founded 1832), the Kunstgewerbeschule, from which today’s Hochschule für Bildende Künste emerged, artist clubs like the “Feuchte Pinsel” (1881), the city’s art dealers, and civic collectors – collectors like Doris Fliegner. The label of the Walter Schwarze art dealer on the large painting shows that it circulated through Braunschweig’s art trade. Her collection also includes groups of works by Braunschweig painters Karl Neuß and Hedwig Hornburg and works by the Salzgitter painter Gustav Hagemann. CONDITION Good condition. The paint layer is closed, impasto; the canvas texture is visible. Not cleaned, not restored. Please view the photos as part of the description.
