Some important indicators help to narrow down the age of such carvings more precisely: • The motif: representations of horses, hunting scenes, or forestry reliefs enjoyed their absolute heyday in the late 19th century in the major carving centers such as Vienna, Ruhla, and Nuremberg. • The coloration (patina): The deep honey- to amber-colored tint in the lower area of the meerschaum head shows that the pipe has been regularly smoked over many years. The nicotine and oils contained in tobacco penetrate the porous material and permanently color it. This uniform discoloration often requires decades. • The connection joint: The dark neck (the transition to the mouthpiece) points to a classic socket or screw connection, as was standard around the turn of the century.
