全部拍賣 / Ethnographic / White Howlite with an Intricate Network Grey Veins Large Sphere
This lot features a remarkable natural howlite sphere from Mexico. With a diameter of over 13 centimeters and a substantial weight of more than 3.5 kg, this specimen stands out for its sculptural presence and exceptional visual contrast. The surface, worked and polished to perfection, reveals an intricate network of gray veining set against a pure white background, evoking the image of precious marble or ancient porcelain. A careful observation of the sphere allows one to appreciate the mineral’s complex beauty. The base is a matte, uniform white, a chromatic foundation that gives the object a sober and luminous elegance. Across this natural canvas lies a dense net of veins, ranging in tone from ash gray to almost black. These lines, sometimes as fine as spiderweb threads and at other points thicker and more concentrated, create an abstract and dynamic graphic that envelops the entire surface. This pattern, described as “brecciated,” is an intrinsic characteristic of howlite and bears witness to the geological processes that formed it. From a mineralogical standpoint, howlite is a hydrated calcium borosilicate that typically forms in evaporitic deposits, often in nodules with a cauliflower-like appearance. Although it is famous for its porosity, which makes it ideal for dyeing and used as a turquoise imitator, finding it in large specimens and in its natural white color, as in this case, is of particular interest to collectors. The sphere cut not only enhances the beauty of the pattern but also attests to skilled lapidary craftsmanship capable of transforming a rough block into a perfectly harmonious geometric form. This sphere transcends its purely mineralogical value to become a sophisticated decorative object and a collectible piece. Its archetypal shape and timeless charm make it suitable for any setting, from a professional studio to a library, to a modern living room. As an element of a contemporary Wunderkammer, it draws the eye and invites contemplation, representing a bridge between nature’s art and human ingenuity. Its visual impact is immediate: a geologic microcosm enclosed within a perfect geometry, a silent dialogue between order and chaos.
