West Africa, Mali / Ghana. A strand of hardstone beads worked from mottled granite in shades of gray, green, cream, and brown. The beads are barrel- and cylinder-shaped, graduated toward a larger central bead, their surfaces smooth from polishing and handling. Hardstone beads are uncommon in most of Africa, but were used in West Africa, where the trade centered on Mali and the entrepot of Timbuktu. The strand is presently strung on monofilament wire and can be restrung as desired. Item # 203769
