We present an extraordinary decorative Chinese carpet-tapestry, 100% handmade in pure silk, conceived as an authentic textile art piece and wall decoration. The composition is based on an abstract expressionist painting by Wassily Kandinsky from the 1920s–1930s, suggesting a landscape with a boat and various figures represented in an abstract manner. The work combines geometric and expressive forms in muted tones and black, on a spectacular yellow and golden background reminiscent of the glow of a sunrise or sunset. This piece was produced by master Chinese artisans approximately between 1970 and 1980, following traditional manual fabrication techniques. The use of pure silk gives the surface a characteristic sheen and luminosity, causing the tones and hues to vary depending on the direction of light. The carpet was conceived especially as an artistic wall-hanging. At its top, it features three woven loops, designed to thread a rod and allow hanging the piece. The loops can also be folded inward for a more discreet and virtually invisible installation. The piece also bears the signature “Kandinsky” woven into the rug itself, visible in one of its corners. Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) was a Russian painter and art theorist, active in Germany during the late Belle Époque and the interwar period. He is considered one of the great pioneers of abstraction in Western art. He was a professor at the famous Bauhaus school of art and design from 1922 until its closure by the Nazis in 1933. He subsequently moved to France, where he remained for the rest of his life. He obtained French citizenship in 1939 and produced some of the most notable works of his career there.
