Vintage Pendant With An Antique Drop-Cut Diamond, Sapphires & Brilliants

This shining diamond pendant is as elegant as it is precious. Its shape is developed from an antique drop-cut diamond. The slightly warm-toned, very pure diamond of an impressive 1.20 ct occupies the center of the design. It is surrounded by a row of dark blue sapphires, which are cut precisely so that they form an uninterrupted, delicate blue band around the diamond drop when set close together. The sapphires are followed, slightly to the rear, by a row of sparkling brilliant-cut diamonds in airy prong settings in white gold. They also echo the drop shape and at the same time complete the design on the outside. Finally, two further brilliant-cut diamonds set the eylet at the upper end, which turns the drop into a pendant. The diamond in the center and the sapphires are set in platinum, while the settings of the brilliant-cut diamonds on the outside and the loop are made of white gold. The pendant was evidently created in two stages. The middle section is a child of the early 20th century. Setting colored stones close together in channel settings was a big fashion in the 1910s. The diamond drop was probably also cut in these years. Perhaps the diamond and sapphires were once a ring or an earring. The diamonds were then added around 1980 and the piece of jewellery became a pendant. We do not know why this happened. Perhaps there was only one earring left and the owner was looking for a way to wear the beautiful diamond again. We discovered the pendant together with its Italian necklace here in Berlin.
