Viking Era Silver sword-belt distributor or strap divider...

Culture: Viking / Early Medieval Date: approximately 9th–11th century AD Object: Sword-belt distributor / strap divider Material: Bronze / copper alloy Diameter: approx. 34 mm Condition: Archaeological condition, with strong green patina, surface oxidation and wear. The overall form and openwork construction remain clearly preserved. The object is cast in bronze and has a distinctive circular openwork construction, measuring approximately 34 mm in diameter. Three large curved openings are arranged around a prominent raised central element, creating a symmetrical three-way configuration. The outer frame is connected at three reinforced junctions, allowing the fitting to function as a strap distributor or divider. Objects of this type formed part of more elaborate belt and suspension systems and were used to organise several leather straps leading from the main belt. Such fittings are particularly associated with military equipment and could form part of the suspension arrangement for a sword or other personal equipment. The substantial construction suggests that the piece was intended to withstand tension from attached leather straps rather than serving purely as decoration. Its openwork design reduced the weight of the fitting while retaining a strong structural form. The central raised element and the pronounced junctions of the outer frame also give the object a decorative appearance. The bronze displays an attractive green archaeological patina, with areas of darker and reddish-brown oxidation visible beneath the surface. The irregularities and surface wear are consistent with prolonged burial and age.
