This unique ornament is crafted in the animal style characteristic of the Viking Age and depicts a mythical serpent, strongly associated with the legendary dragon Fafnir from Norse mythology. According to the *Volsunga Saga*, Fafnir was a dwarf who transformed into a terrible serpent (or dragon) due to his greed for Andvari’s cursed gold. The image of a dragon biting its own tail or entwined with itself serves as a powerful protective talisman.
