Large Satsuma ceramic vase with polychrome decorations and gold. One register depicts nobility, with daimyo and samurai, while the other celebrates the innocence and joy of childhood. ---The vase is in excellent overall condition. There are slight wear to the gilding and enamels. Please refer to the images for further details. Satsuma ceramics represent one of Japan's most precious artistic treasures. Originally produced in Satsuma Province, today Kagoshima, on Kyushu island during the Edo period (1603-1868), Satsuma ceramics are works of art of a unique artisanal quality, which are the result of the incredible skill of Japanese artists and the low-temperature firing technique. This technique allows the creation of delicate shapes and vibrant colors, and its very fine craquelure, visible to the naked eye, is evident in every piece. The depicted subjects often feature human or animal figures, landscapes, flowers and plants, with the choice of colors and shades being very important. In the 19th century, great decorating and modeling masters opened new kilns in the provinces of Kyoto, Awata and Osaka, giving new life to Satsuma ceramics with new techniques, patterns and colors.
