Vase - Bronze

Very handsome vase or perfume burner from the 19th century, Napoléon III period, in solid bronze. Style and decoration: It draws directly from Neo-Greek or Roman Antiquity. The central bas-relief frieze depicts a procession of mythological figures (probably Apollo with his lyre, the Muses and gods with bows). The upper register features a Greek-key frieze and palmette motifs. Finishes: The medal-bronze patina brings out the engraved details, and the gilding on the base provides a nice contrast. The workmanship is very good. Original function: The pierced centre structure and the upper collar indicate that it was probably a mount for a prestige oil lamp / kerosene lamp, a plant-pierce base, or the base of a scent burner (indoor censer).
