The complete Bible. Leuven, 1548, Bartholomeus van Grave. Printed in the famous university and city of Leuven, September 1548. Folio. First edition of the Leuven revision of the Dutch Bible; one of the rarest 16th-century Bible editions in the Low Countries. A very rare Leuven Bible that contains both the Old and New Testaments. This Bible was issued in September 1548 by the Leuven printer Bartholomeus de Grave, who operated under the protection of the university. The translation was made in response to Protestant Bible translations, which used Martin Luther’s German translation as their main source text. For many Catholics, Latin remained the official language—both for liturgy and formal documents—and there was broad consensus that translating the Bible into the vernacular was undesirable, as it could undermine the authority of Rome. Nevertheless, after much hesitation, a translation into Dutch was undertaken, based on the Vulgate—the only text recognized by the Council of Trent (1545–1563). The task was entrusted to Nicolaas de Winghe, canon and librarian at the Augustinian monastery in Leuven, who completed the translation in just one year. Of the 1548 edition, today only about thirty copies are known to exist; this Leuven Bible remained the standard text for Catholics until the end of the 19th century. It is a substantial work, comprising 927 unnumbered pages and 976,000 words, provided with a title page framed by engraved vignettes, as well as numerous woodcuts in the text. This specific copy is complete and still in its original, contemporaneous binding. Condition: !! In the beginning, restorations and repairs are visible. !! About ten leaves at the start have margins that have frayed and been damaged—where restoration of the white margins has led to the loss of some lines and words—, some leaves have also been reinforced with an extra leaf. Also the engraving on the title page and the engraving of 'Het Eerste boeck' show light margin damage and have been restored and reinforced with an extra leaf. These restorations and reinforcements were made to the initial leaves of the book. The original binding shows traces of former book clasps. Several leaves at the beginning professionally reinforced; sometimes with loss of text. Some textual fragments have been placed on a new blank leaf. Furthermore, the book is clean, with normal aging marks (light stains, browning at the edges), compact and complete! Woodcuts sharp and fully printed. No worm damage. No missing or severely damaged leaves. A good copy for a Bible from 1548: complete, well maintained, with early woodcuts in strong prints and a sturdy, historically appropriate binding - 927 unnumbered pages. In Gothic script, two columns, initials in woodcut. Title page in a large woodcut frame with writing Evangelists, a crucifixion scene, study scenes, pastoral tableaux and numerous woodcuts in the text. Beginning of Genesis: large woodcut of the seven days of creation (circular composition from 'Prima dies' to 'Septima dies'). New Testament: four evangelists with their symbols (angel, lion, ox, eagle). Psalter: large woodcut (David and Uriah). Numerous woodcuts in the text. The original binding, later provided with a new spine. Original wooden boards preserved; partly new spine in a matching style. Binding sturdy, functional and aesthetically appropriate for the book. Clasps missing, except for one. Ownership inscription (1642) on the last flyleaf: "dit boch Gotthof Fabis … gehofft Int Jahr 1642". Gotthof Fabis, probably South German or Austrian; "gehofft" is 17th-century for "purchased". The note dates from 1642, less than a century after the printing. At the top of the same page are arithmetic notes from the 16th or 17th century, typical of shield leaves. An early, dated ownership inscription increases the historical value and authenticity of the copy. Bibliographic references, STCN: mentions only a few copies in Dutch institutions. • Darlow & Moule, 'Historical Catalogue of the Printed Editions of Holy Scripture': notes the 1548 edition as the first Leuven revision. • Poortman, Bible and Print: discusses the woodcuts and iconography of the Leuven presses. Adams B 1220 (variants of Leuven editions). The 1548 edition is: the first Leuven revision; considerably rarer than the 1550, 1553 and 1560 editions; almost never on the market; scarce in institutions.
