Original map of European Turkey and part of Asia Minor by Monsieur Janvier, geographer, published in Paris by Jean Lattré. Copper engraving, outlines enhanced by hand in contemporary color. The map covers the Balkans, Greece and the archipelago, the Black Sea, Asia Minor, Crete and Cyprus. It shows the possessions of the Ottoman Empire, which Europeans at the time commonly called “Turkey,” with its provinces delineated in color. Fine rocaille cartouche ornamented with the Ottoman crescent. The frame could not be removed to avoid any damage; consequently, the expert was unable to verify the authenticity of the map, of which the seller is the sole guarantor. Dimensions: map 32.5 × 46 cm. Frame 60 × 45 cm. Condition: Good. Central crease original, as on all atlas plates. Light foxing and stains in places, notably along the central fold. Small signs of handling on the frame. Verso: not visible, the map being framed. The plates of the Atlas Moderne are normally blank on the back. Origin: Atlas Moderne or Collection of maps of all parts of the globe, Paris, Jean Lattré, circa 1770–1780. Plate no. 23. Presentation: framed under glass, black and gold stretcher, cream matt with border. Ready to hang. Shipping: tracked and insured parcel, reinforced packaging (glass protected, cardboard corners, bubble wrap, rigid carton).
