Rare and fascinating encyclopedic compendium of veterinary science, hippology, and horse-keeping of the eighteenth century. This is the monumental work by Giovanni Battista Trutta, a famous Neapolitan farrier and horseman, entitled "Novello Giardino della prattica, ed esperienza". The volume, historically structured in three distinct books within a single tome, represents one of the most important testimonies of zoological science and equestrian art of the era, the fruit of the author’s experience and study spanning over forty years. The volume brings together and fuses three fundamental scientific and historical domains. Book I (Farriery and Equines): based on the famous historical texts by Filippo Scacco da Tagliacozzo and Giordano Ruffo. Includes 3 interesting woodcuts in the text depicting horses, equestrian scenes, and farriery. Book II (Cattle Veterinary Medicine): the foundational treatise attributed to Ippolito Bonacossa devoted to the governance, diseases, and remedies for oxen and cows. It is preceded by a striking full-page woodcut frontispiece depicting a bull set within a rich Baroque frame. Book III (The Art of Riding): structured as Dialogues between Master and Disciple for the formal training of the horse. This section contains two technical woodcut plates illustrating bits and bits-and-reins (bridles for horses), complete with reference letters. Finally, there is the "Table of Illnesses" organized alphabetically for quick medical consultation. Note of exceptional bibliographic interest: although the volume lacks the original title page, the edition has been rigorously identified and dated thanks to the presence, at the end of the introductory text, of the contemporaneous official printing license. The page bears the royal authorization formula: "Die quarta Octobris 1751. Reimprimatur. FRAGGIANNI". The seal bears the printed signature of the famous Neapolitan magistrate Nicola Fraggianni, President-Consultor of the Kingdom of Sicily and Prefect of the Jurors of Revision in Naples, an element that certifies the authenticity and exact dating of the work to October 4, 1751. The work is enriched with elegant original Baroque typographic decorations of the period, including a refined woodcut header at the opening of the Proem, as well as six other equally beautiful and elaborate headers opening the treatises and books, 8 ornate animated wood initials with urban and landscape elements, and 3 final endings. Condition report: exemplar intended for study and restoration, offered with reserve due to the conditions and defects described below. Lacks: the volume is missing the main title page. The text begins with a proem, an introduction to the reader, and the initial pages of the work. The body of the text, the three books and their chapters in their entirety, and all the plates are present. Binding: contemporary full parchment with evident signs of age, with loss at the top of the spine and detached from the body of the book. Interior: The text and internal woodcuts are generally usable and in good condition aside from some evident signs of wear and time. The proem with the first plate is detached, the introduction with the second page is almost detached, the rest of the text remains well bound, the last page of text, the two plates on bites, and the last guard have a large corner deficiency. Overall it is fairly clean, with only some wear on the first pages and then only some stains and scattered foxing on some pages.
