Toon Koster (1913-1989) - Spoorbrug over de maas

This atmospheric painting features an imposing railway bridge that, with its dark, monumental construction, dominates the landscape. Anthonius Bernardus (Toon) Kelder (1894–1973) was a Dutch painter, draftsman, and sculptor. Toon Kelder studied at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague and at the Rotterdam Academy of Visual Arts. He was a pupil of Alexander van Maasdijk and Frederik Nachtweh. Until 1945 he painted nudes and still lifes in the traditional style of the Hague School. After 1948 he shifted drastically to abstract imagery and also began to sculpt. He drew many portraits. Kelder is regarded as part of the Nieuwe Haagse School and was a member of Pulchri Studio.
