Timeless Vintage Diamond Ring in Platinum, c. 1950

Jewellery crafted entirely in cool, luxurious white—this had been one of jewelers’ greatest visions since the late 19th century. For a long time, however, technical limitations stood in the way of this desire. Silver tarnished, and platinum was difficult to work with and significantly more expensive than gold. As a result, even high-quality pieces of jewellery were often set with platinum only on their visible side. It wasn’t until the early 20th century that jewellery made of solid platinum began to be produced more regularly. This ring is no exception: at its center sits a brilliant-cut diamond weighing nearly one carat. With great artisanal finesse, the stone was set in a so-called illusion setting—a technique that is rarely used today. The finely crafted, reflective surface of the setting makes the diamond appear even larger than it actually is. The diamond displays a beautiful natural colour that appears white to the eye, as well as a rich, natural pattern of inclusions that identifies it as a unique product of nature. The center stone is flanked by six octagonal-cut diamonds set into the elegantly rising ring shoulders. Their design, featuring boldly sculpted leaf motifs, lends the ring volume and presence. It exudes the effortless elegance that characterizes many postwar pieces of jewellery and continues to make it highly desirable today. The ring is in excellent condition and came to us from Hamburg. An authentic piece of jewellery from the mid-20th century.
