Tijs Dragtsma (1992) - Void. A Collar Holds the Dark

A figure stands in darkness, and where a face should be, a rose has opened instead. The collar rises high and formal, the shoulders are gathered in soft folds, and above it all a bloom holds the space a head would occupy. Nothing is explained. Nothing needs to be. The image is built entirely from depth and absence. No paint, no print, no ink was added to this surface. A field of individual marks was shaped into it, each one catching light differently, so that the rose and the collar and the long fall of the shoulders emerge only where the surface allows them to. Where the work lets go entirely, there is no mark at all, only the black that any other piece would have filled with information. Here the black is not missing image. It is the image refusing to explain itself further. Up close, the surface is a quiet field of points, dense where the petals curl inward, sparse where a shoulder turns into shadow. Step back and the figure gathers itself into something monumental and still, a silhouette that could be a portrait or could be a question about what a portrait even is. The collar holds its shape with a kind of formal composure, a garment of restraint wrapped around a head that has chosen to be a flower instead. There is an old symbolic weight to a rose standing in for a face. It has meant beauty, secrecy, the brevity of a single bloom, the thing that is looked at rather than the thing that looks back. Placed where a face belongs, it becomes a kind of veil, offering a surface of extraordinary care and tenderness while withholding the one feature we instinctively search for. The work keeps that withholding intact. It does not fill in what the collar and the bloom decline to show. The piece changes with the room it hangs in. Raking light draws the petals forward and lets the shoulders recede into the wall; flatter light softens the whole figure into a near uniform dark, present but unwilling to be read quickly. This is a work that asks to be lived with, not glanced at. This piece continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print. A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence. "A collar can hold a posture. It cannot hold a face that has already become something else." About Art with Void Art with Void is a body of work in which the image is not built through addition. but revealed through absence. From a distance. the image is unmistakable. Strong. clear and immediately present. Yet up close. the work transforms. The viewer discovers a surface composed of precisely carved micro voids in high quality acrylic glass. What seemed whole and still from afar becomes detailed. delicate and deeply structured. Light is essential to the work. In daylight. reflections shift and the image changes subtly with its environment. In darkness. under a focused spotlight. the acrylic glass comes fully alive. Depth intensifies. reflections sharpen. and the image takes on an almost magical presence. This interplay between distance and proximity. image and structure. stillness and transformation lies at the heart of Art with Void. It is a visual language built on reduction. yet rich in atmosphere. precision and presence. About the Artist My name is Tijs Dragtsma, founder of TD Fine Art Studio. As an artist, I am driven by a constant desire to explore new visual languages. I do not see art as a fixed style, but as an evolving field of discovery where material, structure, light and emotion come together. My work often begins with a simple question. How can a material speak in a new way. How can hardness become intimacy. How can precision create emotion. That search lies at the heart of everything I create. Within TD Fine Art Studio, each body of work is approached as its own world, with its own logic, atmosphere and visual identity. Some works are built through rhythm, repetition and structure. Others emerge through absence, shadow, reflection or tension. What connects them is a shared commitment to originality, clarity and emotional presence. I am fascinated by contrast. Between strength and fragility. Between control and feeling. Between what is visible and what is left open to interpretation. My goal is not simply to make an image, but to create a work that holds attention, invites reflection and continues to reveal itself over time. TD Fine Art Studio is the space in which these explorations come together. It is not only a studio, but an evolving artistic universe shaped by curiosity, precision and the ambition to create work that feels distinctive, intentional and alive.
