Measurements: 93 cm overall with chains 27 cm; censer 14 cm ANTIQUE HANGING INCENSER / ECCLESIASTICAL THURIBLE FOR THE CATHOLIC CHURCH An important object of sacred art and decorative arts – Italian craftsmanship from the 18th century A.D. Rare and dramatic hanging thurible of high ornamental quality, conceived according to a refined decorative repertoire in Baroque taste. The structure, of notable sculptural elaboration, is characterized by a strongly inflated globular body, richly adorned with volutes, foliate motifs, floral elements and cartouches in relief, worked with particular attention to depth and movement of the decoration. The lid presents an elegant pierced dome, articulated by openwork motifs and vertical ribs, topped by an elaborate turned terminal with a suspension ring. On the side, the body is completed by a sophisticated system of interlaced chains, joined by large rings and metal fittings. Particularly evocative is the inner brazier, preserved inside the structure and characterized by a marked dark patina, oxidations and chromatic traces that testify to the object’s ancient use. The external surface presents a rich and irregular historic patina, with different argent, golden and brownish tones. The overall surface alterations, oxidations and signs of wear contribute to the strong visual authenticity of the piece. Of particular interest is also the quality of the ornamental details: the large central floral composition, the lateral volutes, the decoration of the lower body and the complex lattice of the lid give the object a notable sculptural presence. The piece is offered as an important collectible, particularly suitable for private collections of sacred art, goldsmithing and ancient decorative arts.
