Theatre.- Terriss (William [real name William Charles James Lewin], actor, 1847-97) Archive of letters, telegrams and documents relating to his will and providing for his stage companion and mistress Jessie Milward after his death addressed to his solicitor Jocelyn Brandon of Brandon & Nicholson, including: letter written from the Hotel Vendome on Broadway, New York, "Put a Codicil in the last Will you made for £500 to be left to JM as a first charge"; agreement between Terriss and Jessie Milward, 14 July 1892, agrees to pay her one fourth of all profits from the Northumberland Arms public house in Covent Garden (document not mentioned in either his 1897 will or the codicil drawn up in May 1897); photograph portrait of Terriss; codicil to Will, 1 May 1897, "I give and bequeath my leasehold messuage... situate in the Parish of Winkfield in... Berks... unto Jessie Millward..."; manuscripts, numerous pp., folds, some slightly browned, v.s., v.d., 1892-97 (c. 30 pieces). *** "Jessie Millward could not protect Terriss from the fate which awaited him at the stage door of the Adelphi Theatre on the evening of 16 December 1897. For some time she had been troubled by nightmares, in particular one in which Terriss was calling out 'Sis! Sis!' from a locked room, the door of which she burst open to catch him as he fell. On the ill-fated night Terriss and John Henry Graves left her flat for the theatre where, just before seven o'clock, Terriss was stabbed three times by an out-of-work actor, Richard Archer Prince. Jessie Millward arrived in time to witness the dreadful scene and to hear Terriss's last words: 'Sis! Sis!'. Terriss's death was as sensational as melodrama; at the ensuing trial, Prince, who had harboured a long-standing sense of grievance against Terriss, was pronounced insane and committed to Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum." - Oxford DNB. A full transcript of this lot is available on request.
