全部拍賣 / Medals, Arms & Armor / The Military Cross (George VI issue), engraved on the revers...

The Military Cross (George VI issue), engraved on the reverse “LT. C. MACNICOL. KOREA. 13.4.51.”, dated 1951 on the lower arm — a named, dated example directly tying the medal to the action for which it was earned. • The Korea Medal, struck with the Elizabeth II effigy (issued after her February 1952 accession, as was standard for Korea service medals awarded to those who served under George VI). The United Nations Service Medal (Korea), reverse inscribed “FOR SERVICE IN DEFENCE OF THE PRINCIPLES OF THE CHARTER OF THE UNITED NATIONS.” MacNicol’s Military Cross was earned across two connected actions in April 1951. On the night engraved on the medal itself, 13-14 April 1951 (contemporary press coverage places the assault “on April 14th,” a natural one-day variance between an engraved citation date and newspaper reporting), Chinese forces launched a determined attack on an isolated Royal Ulster Rifles position. The main weight of the assault fell on MacNicol’s own platoon. His forward section was penetrated and every grenade in the platoon exhausted, yet it was, in the words of a contemporary regional press account, his “coolness and disregard for his own personal safety” that broke the enemy’s momentum, dispersing them and leaving dead, wounded, and prisoners behind, while he rallied his men and recovered the lost ground. Little more than a week later, MacNicol was in the thick of the Battle of the Imjin River itself (22-25 April 1951) — the action since immortalised by the Glosters’ stand on Hill 235 and one of the most storied engagements in modern British military history. As the 29th Independent Infantry Brigade withstood the full force of the Chinese Spring Offensive, MacNicol again distinguished himself, moving in the open under fire to encourage and reposition his men. What sets this group apart is the officer’s own position: a Border Regiment officer attached to the Royal Ulster Rifles, serving within one of the three British infantry battalions — alongside the Glosters and the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers — that bore the brunt of the Imjin battle. The group is further supported by a contemporary regional newspaper feature naming MacNicol directly and quoting the substance of his citation, giving it a depth of documented provenance rarely found alongside the medals themselves. Military Crosses for Korea sit within a genuinely limited category of award — reserved for officers and warrant officers for individually assessed acts of gallantry, within a conflict whose total British gallantry awards were modest set against the two World Wars. Combined with a named, dated engraving, a supporting press account, and a clearly identified action on the Imjin front, this is a group that tells a complete and independently verifiable story. Comes with the original MC box and citations.
