A later printing of the "first American comic book" in pictorial panels is the work of Swiss caricaturist, Rodolphe Topffer, translated to English and published in America. This volume is missing original covers and endpapers, but is sewn as a pamphlet binding and protected by a 4-flap enclosure of very thin boards, covered in blue linen bookcloth with heavy blue paper flaps and lined with same. The enclosure slides into a matching slipcase quarter- bound in dark blue leather with blue linen sides. A rounded spine shows the title, decorative tooling, and date, in gilt. The title page shows smudges, mending, and moisture staining. Pages 2-8 show light stain at gutter, mending tissue at gutter and edges. Pages 5-77 are clear, show light toning, no foxing. The last page,80, shows more mending. Page 2 is the only page that shows coloring to coats and dress, as if done neatly by a child. The story of Obadiah Oldbuck is a quaint and humorous tale of misadventures in life and with his lady-love. Contact seller if more photos are desired.
