全部拍賣 / Coins & Banknotes / (t) CHINA. Silver Tael Pattern, Year 29 (1903). Tientsin Mint (struck

Colossally Rare "Hu Poo" Tael Pattern (t) CHINA. Silver Tael Pattern, Year 29 (1903). Tientsin Mint (struck from Osaka Mint Dies). Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). PCGS SPECIMEN-62. L&M-1; K-927A; KM-Pn295; WS-0016; Wenchao-79 (rarity: ★★★★). Variety with small English legend, with incuse dot on fiery pearl, and without inner serifs on "liang". Already a TREMENDOUSLY RARE and wondrous imperial pattern issue, this stunning piece is made that much more desirable on account of minor die variations. Notably, here there is an incuse dot near the bottom of the fiery pearl, while 兩 is written slightly differently, with the inner strokes without serifs--being rendered as 人 rather than 入. While this may not seem like much, the present example stands as the first such instance of this type (K-927A) in one of our sales, and clearly shatters the accolades of the previous straight-graded overall example of the type within our sales--a mere PCGS SPECIMEN-55 from the Pinnacle Collection, which realized a total of $840,000 in our April 2021 Hong Kong Auction (Lot # 50006). Exceptionally crisp and exacting, with tantalizing brilliance across the surfaces and a slight burnished iridescent nature to the toning. No doubt destined for an immensely advanced cabinet dedicated to the finest of Chinese RARITIES within the vintage series. Although struck at the Tientsin mint, the original dies were ordered from and prepared by the Osaka mint in Japan under the supervision of Robert Hart, Inspector General of Maritime Customs. The initial goal was an early attempt to unify Chinese coinage on the gold standard, producing denominations in 1 Tael and its fractions: 5 Mace, 2 Mace, Mace, and 1/2 Mace. The project never went into full production for a few reasons. First, the outlined plan called for one central mint to be responsible for coinage production to insure the uniformity of the new coinage, which the directors of the provincial mints heavily resisted due to potential profit cuts. Also, at this time in China, there was no plan in place to deal with the vastly different types of paper money circulating and how to accept them in exchange. Estimate: $750,000 - $1,250,000.
