Coins & Banknotes / (t) CHINA--REPUBLIC. Central Bank of China. 100 Yuan, 1945. P-277B.

(t) CHINA--REPUBLIC. Central Bank of China. 100 Yuan, 1945. P-277B. S/M#C300. PMG About Uncirculated 55. Printed by the Shanghai Central Printing Factory (CPFS), 'For Circulation in Taiwan'. Purple-blue, Sun Yat Sen at left, similar in appearance to the Fabi notes issued in the 1940s. Extremely rare. Tied with one other note as the finest graded in the PMG population report. In 1945, Japan surrendered Taiwan back to China after ruling it for fifty years. In October that year, the Finance Ministry of the Nationalist Government authorised the printing of these notes in order to integrate the local economy with the Mainland. However, due to local officials' and merchants' preference for Bank of Taiwan banknotes, these notes were never officially released and only a few escaped destruction. Denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 Yuan were proposed, but only the 10, 50 and 100 Yuan notes are known to exist. All are extremely rare. Estimate: $4,000 - $7,000. Provenance: From the Renaissance Collection of Central Bank of China. (t) This lot was manufactured in China (including Hong Kong), Russia or Republic of Belarus and was sourced from outside the United States for this auction after tariffs were enacted by the United States.
