T-4 1861 $50 T-4. Confederate Currency. 1861 $50. PCGS Currency Fine 15 Apparent. Cross-Cut Cancelled; Cancellations Closed; Major Repairs. Penned Agent Endorsement. "Anthony J. Guirot - Assistant Treasurer, Confederate States Department of the Treasury." No. 394. Plate A. Among a limited number of notes issued from the provisional capital of the Confederate States of America during the opening stages of the conflict. This well-circulated T-4 $50 represents the lowest denomination from that emission and stands as an honest survivor that offers much despite the grade assigned. Here a rich complexity of color and detail speaks to the technical prowess of the National Bank Note Company while simultaneously demonstrating a level of sophistication that went unmatched as the war progressed. Looking to the back, one may observe a pair of distinct penned endorsements. The first of these is the penned endorsement of Anthony J. Guirot who served as Assistant Treasurer of the Confederate States of America, but after New Orleans fell to Union occupation in 1862, Guirot relocated to Jackson and ultimately to Mobile where his tenure in Confederate service ended when the city fell in 1864. The second endorsement is something of a mystery but provides something worthy of further research for the specialist making this a note bound to please whoever may place the winning bid. PCGS Currency comments "Cross-Cut Cancelled; Cancellations Closed; Major Repairs." Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000.
