Spirit figure from Saumatra - Batak people - Indonesia (No reserve price)

An intriguing and highly expressive wooden spirit figure attributed to the Batak people of North Sumatra, Indonesia. The carving depicts a crouching, almost monkey-like creature with an unusually large head, deeply recessed eyes, prominent rounded ears and a projecting muzzle. Its bent arms and legs create a compact, dynamic composition, while the hands appear to support the chin, giving the figure a mysterious and contemplative expression. The body and base are decorated with finely incised linear patterns that emphasise the sculptural form. Among the Batak, carved figures have traditionally been associated with ancestral spirits, protective forces and ritual practices, although the precise spiritual significance of this particular figure remains uncertain. The wood displays a beautiful, warm brown patina, with lighter highlights on the raised surfaces and visible traces of handling and wear. The figure was field collected by a German collector who spent several months in the region during the 1980s. An unusual and characterful piece of Indonesian tribal art, particularly appealing to the passionate collector of Batak art, traditional spirit figures and ethnographic sculpture.
