This is a historical map of South America copper-engraved and hand-colored, titled "America Meridionalis per sua regna, provincias et ins.", originally published in Augsburg around 1744 by the celebrated German cartographer Matthäus Seutter. Created by Matthäus Seutter (1678–1756) and subsequently printed and distributed also in collaboration with his son-in-law [Tobias Conrad Lotter], whose name appears in the editorial note at the bottom ("Augspurg im Verlag bey Tob. Conr. Lotter..."). Geographical content: It shows the entire South American continent divided into the main kingdoms and colonial provinces of the era (primarily Spanish and Portuguese domains), based on the most recent astronomical observations and geographic descriptions of the period. The dense water networks of the Amazon River and the Río de la Plata, together with the Andean mountain range, are finely delineated. Decorative elements: At the lower left stands a rich allegorical cartouche, finely colored, depicting idealized scenes of the New World, including Native Americans, marine deities (a mermaid), tropical flora (such as palms), and elements of local fauna.
