Sotheby’s Amsterdam 1990

This scarce catalog is an essential reference document for the early provenance history of Indonesian ethnographic artifacts. Dutch auctions from this period were internationally renowned for their exclusive access to old, high-quality colonial private collections. As a result, top pieces appeared on the market that were rarely found in London or New York. Focus: Batak & Nias Within this volume there is a strong, richly illustrated focus on the refined tribal art of the Batak (Sumatra) and the monumental culture of Nias. The catalog documents rare sculptures, ritual objects, and ceremonial artifacts that form the core of the early Dutch collecting history. This copy is in good, solid condition. What makes this particular piece exceptionally valuable for the serious collector, dealer, or art historian is the presence of handwritten bid results for the vast majority of lots. This market research noted directly in the margins transforms this catalog from a regular book into a unique historical market document that preserves the dynamics and hammer prices of the auction room exactly. Cross-references & Context The documented objects show strong stylistic and historical cross-references with top pieces in leading institutional collections, such as the Wereldmuseum Amsterdam (formerly Tropenmuseum) and the Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden. For the connoisseur, this catalog offers indispensable comparative data to verify the authenticity and market value of early Indonesian art. Note for bidders This copy forms a perfect unit with other high-quality ethnographic publications in this auction (including Africa, Oceania, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea). Bidders are advised to also view the remaining lots in this auction for a unique chance to build or expand a specialized art-historical library in one go. Shipping with Track & Trace. When purchasing multiple lots, a fair adjustment of shipping costs is applied, commensurate with the total volume and insured value. Pickup: Possible in The Hague, Benoordehout (2596GN).
