The paper retains a beautiful presence, the blacks are intense and velvety, the line remains of remarkable vigor and precision. Natural patina of time, perfectly coherent with the age of the work. No tears, no significant stains. Sold unframed. Provenance Collection Françoise Bronkart, daughter of the artist Direct provenance from the family workshop – piece stayed within the estate Cataloguing Listed in the artist’s online catalogue raisonné: https://art-info.be/oeuvres/fusain-n-6 Titled in the catalogue: Fusain n° 6 – 1952. Magnificent and expansive charcoal from 1952, created at a moment when Silvin Bronkart fully asserts his abstract language, three years after the founding of the Réalité group (precursor to Réalité-Cobra) in Liège. The composition unfolds a masterful tangle of angular forms, ovals and architectured volumes. A network of straight lines, arcs and shaded planes organizes space like an expanding organism. The black masses, obtained by dense hatching and velvety smudges, converse with the paper’s whiteness, which breathes and structures light. On the left, triangular planes and grids intertwine; in the center and right, more organic shapes — ovals, ellipses, twisting volumes — give the whole an almost corporeal presence. The charcoal is handled with a virtuosity already accomplished: nervous strokes, subtle gradations, zones of spatial depth. The tension between construction and spontaneity, between geometric rigor and lyrical breath, is typical of his best graphic period. The energy still close to Cobra here refines into a more personal, lyrical and architectural abstraction, already anticipating the pursuits of Informal Art while preserving this graphically intense Liège style. A rare piece for its ambitious format, its presence in the catalogue raisonné, its monogram and impeccable family provenance. Ideal for collectors of postwar Belgian abstraction, high-quality modern drawings, and Liège art of the 1950s. Biography of Silvin Bronkart Silvin Bronkart (full name Silvin, Joseph, Louis Bronkart; sometimes written Bronckart / Bronckaert), nicknamed Silvin, was born June 14, 1915 in Liège. Trained at the Institut Saint-Luc de Liège (1930-1939) with Jean Julémont and Félix Proth, he won the Grand Prize at the final exam. After the wartime exodus, he settled permanently in Liège, married Lucie, daughter of the painter Edgar Scauflaire, and became one of the central figures of the Liège avant-garde. From 1947, he was co-opted into APIAW, where he would later serve as secretary of the Commission of Fine Arts and organizer of exhibitions, as well as art columnist for Monde du Travail. In 1948-1949, he co-founded with Pol Bury, Georges Collignon, Paul Franck, Maurice Léonard and Léopold Plomteux the group Réalité, the first Belgian collective entirely devoted to abstraction. The group quickly affiliated with Cobra (Réalité-Cobra). His output remains deliberately limited, almost ascetic. Died prematurely on July 5, 1967 in Herstal, at 52, Silvin did not live to see recognition commensurate with his rigor. A long silence followed his passing. His works — largely kept in the family estate, notably at his daughter Françoise’s — were truly rediscovered only thanks to the online catalogue raisonné and a few retrospectives. This rarity, coupled with the extraordinary quality of the major charcoal drawings from the early 1950s, today makes them sought-after pieces. His works are notably in the Museum of Walloon Art / Liège Beaux-Arts Museum, MuZEE in Ostend, and in important Walloon private collections (including that of patron Fernand Graindorge). Major exhibitions (selection) • 1947 — APIAW, Liège • 1948 — Galerie Lou Cosyn, Brussels (with Maurice Léonard) • 1949 — Belgium Quadrennial Salon, Palace of Fine Arts, Liège • 1950 — First Réalité-Cobra group exhibition, APIAW, Liège • 1951 — Second Réalité-Cobra exhibition, APIAW, Liège • 1955-1958 — Group exhibitions at APIAW (with Bury, Collignon, Holley, Léonard, Rets…) • 1956 — Liège painting of today, Municipal Museum, Ostend • 1958 — Belgian Week, Newark then Galerie Albert Landry, New York • 1964 — APIAW, Liège (hand-worked lead, with Auguste Scevenels) • 1966 — Galerie du Damier, Paris; 21st Salon of Réalités Nouvelles, Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris • 1981 — Silvin Bronkart retrospective, La Châtaigneraie, Flémalle • 1982 — Réalité-Cobra, La Châtaigneraie, Flémalle • 1988 — Abstraction ’50, Liège • 1993 — COBRA, Réalité-Cobra, Salle Saint-Georges, Liège • 1995 — Silvin retrospective, Art Gallery Jean-Paul Delaye, Liège Silvin occupies a singular place in Walloon abstraction: less media-exposed than some Cobra companions, more secret, more constructive. His grand Charcoals of 1952 — including the present Fusain n° 6 — are the purest and rarest expression of that phase.
