First edition, wrappered issue. Octavo. 150pp. Pictorial wrappers. Light soiling and modest overall wear, else near fine. Signed by Herbert Aptheker. Walker's appeal printed with a facsimile of the title page, a reprint of Henry Highland Garnets's memoir of Walker, and Aptheker's commentary. In 1829 David Walker, a free African-American originally from the South, wrote the first edition of what was the most radical anti-slavery document printed up to that time, appealing to slaves to revolt against their masters, even urging them to take lives if their own lives were threatened. Furthermore, his appeal was critical of African re-colonization by ex-slaves, arguing that America belonged more to the slaves who had earned it with their blood that to whites. The force and extremity of Walker's *Appeal* was insupportable by most abolitionists. For some, however, his *Appeal* remained a rallying point well beyond Walker's untimely death in 1830.
