1st edition, 1st printing. With a hand-written letter from the author laid in and SIGNED. A Very Good + book. 8vo., 226 pp., illustrated with a double page map frontispiece. Bound in the publisher's maroon cloth with gilt titles. Light edge wear, with a slightly darkened / sunned spine. Paper clip marks on the title page and table of contents page. Occasional light pencil notations, mostly correcting the text. Laid in letter from the author, instructing the recipient that a copy of the book was ordered sent from the printers and where to remit payment for the book. Also laid in is the 2 pages of typed notes further adding to the history of the county (presumably from the letters recipient). Alleghany County was created in 1822 from Bath and Botetourt counties. With such topics as trade and transportation, labor, farming, politics, and race relations - all important in the development of the county - are carefully discussed. A particular useful feature of this book are the hundreds of mini biographies inter dispersed through out the book.
