Beautiful hand-cast and decorated Buddhist offering stand in brass (1880 grams) – Burma / Thailand, circa mid-20th century Description: An impressive and heavy, traditional Buddhist altar and offering set, hand-crafted from solid yellow brass (messing). This complete ensemble shines with craftsmanship, rich engravings, and a beautiful, well-aged antique patina. The indigenous or traditional name for the shape on which this type of object is based is a thabeik (the traditional alms basket or alms bowl used by Buddhist monks). In Burma (Myanmar) such large, richly decorated offering bowls and complete sets are referred to as traditional alms bowls or offering vessels / offering cups. Composition and Dimensions: The total weight of the set is 1880 grams. The set consists of the following parts: Large offering pot / incense burner with pointed lid: Diameter 17 cm, height 20 cm including the lid. Second offering pot / small dish: Diameter 6 cm, height 5.5 cm. Hexagonal vase shape: Height 8.5 cm, length 8 cm and width 5 cm. Two small cups / offering bowls: Diameter 4.5 cm, height 4 cm. (Note: the set is supplied including the depicted brass ashtray/holder with lip as an extra addition in the same style). The complete set consists of 6 separate components (including the extra ashtray/cigar holder) that can be placed together on the serving tray and the dish: - The large offering pot / incense burner (with the accompanying pointed lid) - The small round serving tray on legs - The hexagonal vase shape - The second offering pot / the small dish - Two small cups / offering bowls - (Extra addition) The brass ashtray / holder with lip Material and Manufacture: The object is made from solid yellow brass (messing), a strong alloy of copper and zinc that provides substantial weight and a bright, clear tone when touched. The bottom and interior show the typical characteristics of traditional artisanal sand-casting (such as the granular texture and the central casting point on the underside). Over decades the metal has developed a warm gold-tone luster, combined with a beautiful dark patina in the recessed engraved edges. Use and Culture: This type of object was used in Buddhist traditions of Southeast Asia (notably Myanmar/Burma and Thailand) on home altars or in temples. The individual pots, vases and bowls were used for offering symbolic gifts such as pure water, incense, flowers or light, to pay homage to the Buddha and accrue spiritual merit. Symbolism and Decorations: The set is richly decorated with fine hand-engraved motifs: Floral motifs and lotus leaves: Symbolize purity, enlightenment and spiritual growth within Buddhism. Geometric bands and swastikas: In Asian culture the swastika is an ancient and powerful symbol of prosperity, happiness, harmony and eternity (the heart of Buddha), long before the symbol took on a different meaning in the West. Condition: Good used and authentic condition with light signs of aging and a beautiful natural patina that underscores age and authenticity. Careful Shipping: We understand that antiques and heavy copper work require extra protection during transport. This lot will be packaged with the utmost care.
