Shmidt.Art - Fiat - FIAT 500 F - 1960s

A premium automotive technical poster dedicated to the 1968 Fiat Nuova 500 F — one of the most recognizable and influential small cars in European automotive history. This artwork presents the Fiat 500 F in a clean factory technical-data-sheet style, combining precise front, side, rear and overhead views with dimensional references and a detailed representation of its compact rear-mounted powertrain. The Fiat Nuova 500 Introduced in 1957, the Nuova 500 was created as an exceptionally compact and economical automobile for post-war Italy. Designed by Dante Giacosa, its simple mechanical layout, extremely small dimensions and unmistakable rounded body made the 500 an enduring symbol of Italian urban mobility. The 500 F Introduced during the 1960s, the 500 F became one of the best-known versions of the Nuova 500. By the 1968 model year, the compact two-door body retained the characteristic rear-engine architecture, short wheelbase and folding fabric roof that helped define the model. Its minimal dimensions allowed the car to navigate dense European cities while providing practical transportation with remarkably little mechanical complexity. 499.5 cm³ Air-Cooled Twin At the rear is a 499.5 cm³ naturally aspirated inline two-cylinder engine. The compact air-cooled unit produces approximately 13 kW / 18 PS and represents one of the defining engineering characteristics of the classic Fiat 500. With no conventional liquid-cooling system required, the engine remained mechanically simple, lightweight and exceptionally compact. Rear-Engine Layout Both the engine and driven wheels are positioned at the rear. This packaging solution allowed Fiat to maximize passenger space within a body measuring less than three metres in overall length. The technical overhead illustration highlights the location of the small two-cylinder engine behind the passenger compartment and demonstrates how efficiently the mechanical components were packaged. Four-Speed Manual Transmission Power is transmitted through a four-speed manual gearbox to the rear wheels. Combined with the lightweight body and modest engine output, the drivetrain was designed primarily around simplicity, economy and urban usability rather than outright performance. Compact Engineering The Fiat 500 F measures only 2970 mm in length and 1320 mm in width, with a wheelbase of 1840 mm. Its exceptionally small footprint is one of the defining elements of the design and becomes particularly clear when viewed through the poster’s orthographic technical drawings. Technical Dimensions Wheelbase: 1840 mm Front track: 1121 mm Rear track: 1135 mm Overall length: 2970 mm Overall width: 1320 mm Overall height: 1325 mm Despite these extremely compact dimensions, the cabin was engineered to provide seating within a remarkably small exterior envelope. Lightweight Construction With a curb weight of approximately 520 kg, the 500 F requires relatively little power to move efficiently through urban environments. The combination of low mass, a compact rear-mounted engine and simple mechanical construction contributed greatly to the model’s economical character. Performance The 499.5 cm³ twin-cylinder engine produces approximately 13 kW / 18 PS at around 4,600 rpm. Top speed is approximately 95 km/h. These figures reflect the original purpose of the Fiat 500: inexpensive, efficient and accessible transportation rather than high-speed performance. Detailed Technical Composition The artwork includes a front elevation, large side profile, rear elevation and oversized orthographic top view. Dimension lines emphasize the extraordinarily compact proportions of the car, while the overhead illustration reveals the placement of the rear-mounted engine. A structured technical-data section presents the engine, transmission, weight, dimensions and performance information in the style of a period factory engineering document. The warm ivory background, restrained black linework, subtle mechanical shading and period-inspired Fiat technical inspection stamp reinforce the archival character of the composition.
