Sea Snail Sea shell - S-587 CHARONIA LAMPAS (No reserve price)

The beautiful shell of Charonia lampas is a species of predatory marine snail, a mollusk in the family Charoniidae. The shell consists of 8–9 whorls with a moderately elevated conical spire and convex whorls, the last of which is broad and makes up a little over two-thirds of the total height. The spiral whorls have indistinct shoulders, with very flat spiral cords separated by weakly defined, rather narrow intervals; the whorl is adorned with a much wider and flatter cord and usually, though not always, bears a spiral series of tubercles, parallel to the abapical side with smaller flat cords and spiral rows of tubercles or without them. The large aperture has an oval shape with a finely sculptured peristome. The outer lip is flared, thickened a short distance from the edge, with internal teeth. The inner part of the whorl reveals a flattened umbilical callus, transitioning into a foliated columnar callus, which has a raised edge above the siphonal canal on large specimens and shows indistinct ridges toward the edge. The coloration is very characteristic, with interlocking spiral bands of light spots on the tubercles and dark brown at intervals, alternating with medium brown homogeneous bands. The peristome is white with dark brown teeth on the outer lip and a brownish to reddish tinge on the edge of the columellar callus. Dimensions – 60/80/155 mm. The shell has a damaged siphon, as visible in the photos. Highly recommended for collectors and interior decorators.
