The skull and bones, symbols of the transience of earthly existence, are placed at the foot of the Cross and associated with the emblems of the Passion, according to a Christian reading of death as a passage to redemption. The works retain their respective elaborate shaped frames in late Baroque‑rocaille taste. The two paintings on paper show a natural patina of time, with yellowing and diffuse browning of the support, light stains, small abrasions and surface irregularities. Thin hairline fractures, folds and creases are also visible, more evident in some areas of one of the two pieces, as well as minor wear and loss of painting material along some marginal zones. The chroma remains sufficiently legible and preserves much of the original tones, particularly yellows, greens, browns and red elements. The shaped frames with silver finish show widespread traces of time, oxidations and surface alterations, wear, abrasions, small losses and carving irregularities, all consistent with age and use. Overall, the works maintain good iconographic legibility and appreciable overall integrity. The current state also contributes to preserving their historical character and antique patina.
