Historical-artistic description The painting depicts the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus, represented standing on a supporting surface, while She raises Her right hand in a benedictive gesture and holds with the left a small wooden cross, an evident anticipation of the future sacrifice of the Passion. The Madonna, wrapped in a wide blue mantle over a pinkish robe, presents a sweet and meditative expression. The face, slightly inclined, is characterized by regular features, large eyes and delicate modeling, in accordance with an idealized conception of female beauty. The composition stands out for its formal balance, the softness of the flesh tones and the refined chromatic alternation between the warm tones of the figures and the dark background. Stylistic analysis and attribution The work presents elements attributable to the Italian classicist tradition, with possible affinities to Emilia and Bologna devotional painting of the eighteenth century. The arrangement of the faces, the smooth rendering of the flesh tones, and the composure of the composition generally recall the figurative culture developed in the circle of Carlo Cignani and Marcantonio Franceschini, without however allowing a direct attribution to these artists. The anatomical construction of the Child and the rather regular handling of the draperies also suggest the possibility of execution from a preceding modello.
