SCHULTHESS (Emil) — CHINA SCHULTHESS (Emil). China. Preface by Jules Roy. Texts by Emil Egli, Edgar Snow, Harry Hamm, and Emil Schulthess. Paris, Éditions Albin Michel, 1966. Large and sturdy oblong quarto, publisher’s cloth-bound edition in orange, gilt title on the spine, Chinese characters embossed in white and blue on the front cover. Very abundant black-and-white and color photographs, maps. The BnF confirms this is the 1966 French edition published by Albin Michel, translated from German by Denise Van Moppès. A beautiful photographic book on 1960s China, produced by Swiss photographer Emil Schulthess. Its appeal goes beyond that of a mere travel book: architecture, landscapes, daily life, industry, mines, the population, and China’s economic transformations are documented through exceptionally meticulous photography. The large fold-out map traces the journeys undertaken for the book. Condition: good overall condition. Hardcover intact, with some scuffing and minor signs of wear; interior appears fresh based on the photographs.
