San Francisco Mint Cast Silver Ingot. Undated Type II Oval Hallmark. Ingot No. 1004. 25.55 Ounces. 999.5 Fine. 59.8 mm x 92.0 mm x 14.0 mm. The front face is stamped (oval hallmark) / 1004 / 24.55 OZ[S] / 999.5, the upper edge stamped with the number 14. Straight-stem 9s in the fineness. Most faces are toned in soft mauve-gray patina, the bottom face untoned apart from a few swirls of charcoal-russet that are most prevalent around the edge. The bottom face is also interesting in that there are a few copper-colored depressions at bottom, accompanied by several deep "lines" (similar to adjustment marks on coins, but deeper) that we believe are Mint-made - when taken together, these features point to a metallic impurity in the ingot in this area, which was then (mostly) removed in the Mint. Definitely a curious feature, and one that we cannot recall seeing on another classic San Francisco Mint silver ingot.
