Stamped Royal Bonn, Bonn. A Royal Bonn proverb board, made in Bonn around 1910 to 1920, with the proverb 'Oost west thuis best' in yellow letters with blue outlining. The mirror shows a homecoming on the quay, built up from stencil layers with soft transitions. The impressed mark on the bottom places the board at the German factory that supplied Dutch proverb boards. A man steps from a boat onto the quay, arms outstretched toward a woman with a bonnet who is carrying a child. Behind them: a house, moorings and ships. At the bottom of the edge runs a blue and ochre scroll motif between green lines. Two hanging slots are in the foot ring. Royal Bonn is the export trade mark of the Steingutfabrik Franz Anton Mehlem in Bonn, founded in 1836 or 1840 (sources vary). Villeroy & Boch took over the factory in 1920 and closed it in 1931. Condition: Good. Fine crazing across the entire glaze, typical for earthenware of this age. Mirror and edge: nicks and light wear from use. A small spot on the right edge near the letters. Brown discoloration on the left backside of the edge. No cracks, breaks or restorations observed. See the photos. Offered as a decorative wall panel, not intended for use with food. In the interior: Fits into a Dutch, retro or eclectic interior, on the wall of a kitchen or hall. The yellow edge letters with blue outlining are noticeable even from a distance. Attribution and sources: The maker is Royal Bonn (Franz Anton Mehlem) on the basis of the impressed round stamp; the text inside is not readable in the photos. The mark type corresponds to the round stamps on the Mehlem plates at De Lakenhal (inventory 8205). Those plates measure 22.3 cm, this board 24 cm. A documented example of this model has not been found. The Royal Bonn mark, according to sources, operated from 1890 to 1919 or 1920, which bounds the dating.
