ROMAN POLYCHROME MOSAIC WITH GEOMETRIC MOTIF

Ca. AD 200 - 300 . A rectangular polychrome mosaic panel in *opus tessellatum*, its elongated proportions suggesting an original placement within a corridor or long reception room of a Roman villa. The composition is centred upon a dynamic wheel of curving radial segments in terracotta, ochre, and ivory, enclosed by a dark circular field edged with outward-turning spirals. Two smaller roundels balance the central motif within a pale lozenge-shaped panel, while the surrounding blue-grey compartments are filled with rhythmic scrollwork. A chequered band frames the principal field, followed by an outer border of continuous wave scrolls outlined against black. The restrained palette of cream, dusty rose, ochre, blue-grey, and dark stone creates a delicate but clearly articulated polychromy. The tesserae are laid in compact, regular courses, with the *andamento* carefully adjusted to follow the wheel, spirals, and geometric divisions. This controlled construction is characteristic of the mature Roman mosaic tradition of the early Imperial period. Well preserved, with the design and colour contrasts remaining substantially intact.
