Roman Judean Blown Glass Unguentarium with Flared Rim

Roman, Imperial period, Judea. A free-blown glass unguentarium with a tall body that swells at the shoulder and narrows to a rounded base. A short neck rises to a wide, everted mouth with a folded rim. The glass was once pale green and translucent, but long burial has given it earthy encrustations streaked across the interior. Slender bottles like this held perfumed oils, unguents, and cosmetics. They are found in homes and, very often, in tombs, where they were probably left as offerings. The rounded base suggests the vessel was meant to lie on its side or stand in a holder or in sand, not on a flat surface. Item # 205192
