Maunder Watch Co have for sale a Rolex Sea-Dweller Ref. 1665 ‘Comex’. The French commercial diving company, COMEX, was established in 1961 to explore the unknown depths of the oceans. Between 1970 and 1997, COMEX worked very closely with Rolex, a mutual partnership that allowed Rolex to test, prototype and developed many of the features we see today on our modern tool watches. This highly sought-after Rolex Sea-Dweller COMEX Reference 1665 features the original and rare ‘MK1 Pisani dial’ with original Tritium lume. The case back issue numbers are clear and ledgeable and enabled us to research more into the history. Fortunately thanks to ‘The Old Watch Shop’ (a expert in Comex watches) has gone through the ‘Quarter Masters’ records and found the original order document from COMEX, complete with the diver’s name and job title, listed as a “Treasure Finder”, This remarkable detail further enhances the allure and provenance of this specific watch. According to the original order document, the Comex number on the back of the watch was supplied by Rolex S.A. in February 1981 as part of a batch of 28 watches sent to Comex in Aberdeen, with the serial number 617****. At some stage during the watch’s history, it was returned to Rolex for a full overhaul, at which time it was found the integrity of the case had been compromised, such as the helium escapement failing. In order to maintain the water resistant capability of the watch, Rolex supplied a replacement mid-case, which was given the serial number 441****. The watch is in excellent condition throughout, a testament to its durability. Overall, this Sea-Dweller offers a combination of robust functionality and historical significance, making it a must-have for collectors.
