The title, inscribed in pencil, The Faculty of Empathy, provides a rare and explicit key to a composition that remains deliberately ambiguous. On the left, a broad dark mass, almost animal or human in profile, occupies the edge of the sheet. In the center, a long hybrid form rises with a bright orange eye, looking to the right. Further on, a large pale, lunar circle bears a second eye wide open, fixed and frontal. Between these elements, small circular motifs and colored traces (pink, ochre, gray) link the figures without ever fully joining them. The gaze circulates, moves, settles. The eyes do not really meet: they seek each other, measure each other, respond from a distance. This is precisely where the title makes sense. Empathy is not here a fusion or communion, but a tension, a fragile and uncertain faculty between beings that remain distinct. Detheux does not tell of a meeting; he shows its difficulty and possibility. The surface, heavily worked, scratched, worn, reinforces this reading. Nothing is smooth or immediate. The material resists, as if the relationship itself must forge a path. Biography of the artist : Born in Brussels in 1932 and passed away in Tournai in 2010, Robert Detheux is a singular figure in Belgian art of the 20th century. A graduate of the Saint-Luc Institute in Fine Arts in Brussels, he taught graphic expression at the Tournai Academy until 1996, while pursuing a personal body of work of great coherence. From the 1950s, he developed a very personal surrealist and graphic language. He received the Belgian Young Painting Prize in 1953, 1954 and 1971. The 1970s deepened themes of the body and female face, hybrid figures and textures. The following decades continued this territory toward the grotesque, eroticism and black humor, before the spectrally rendered portraits and the appearances of the 2000s. Little-exhibited in his lifetime, Detheux worked freely. The discovery of his studio archive (nearly 1,500 works) made this coherence visible. His drawing, demanding and immediately recognizable, now attracts collectors of Belgian surrealism in Belgium, Spain and Europe.
