Rare blue Aurichalcite

It is also characterized by dense tufts of radiating thin acicular crystals in a blue-to-teal color that cover a brown-orange limonitic matrix, with a sharp and decisive color contrast between the secondary mineral and the hosting oxidized rock, elements that enhance its aesthetic value and mineralogical importance. The specimen stands out for the quality of crystallization and for the overall aesthetic balance, with features that enhance its natural structure and visual impact. Auricalcite is a hydrated zinc and copper carbonate, (Zn,Cu)5(CO3)2(OH)6, which typically forms in the oxidation zone of polymetallic zinc- and copper-rich deposits, where meteoric waters alter primary sulfides. The characteristic blue-green color is due to the presence of copper in the crystal structure, while the zinc component tends to lighten the shade. Kipushi Mine, in Haut-Katanga, is one of the richest polymetallic deposits in the world, historically famous for the extraordinary variety of secondary copper, zinc, lead, and germanium species formed there.
